Signs Your Gutters Need Repair or Replacement

Thompson Roofing Riverside & Inland Empire Gutters

Gutters are easy to ignore - until they're not working. Most Inland Empire homeowners don't think much about their gutters during the long dry months, but when the rain finally shows up in Riverside or Norco, failing gutters can cause serious damage in a single storm. The problem is that gutter damage doesn't usually announce itself loudly. It hides in plain sight: a sag here, a gap there, a little rust you figured wasn't a big deal. By the time water is pooling against your foundation or rotting your fascia boards, the repair bill is already a lot bigger than it needed to be. Knowing when to get gutter installation or repair work done can save you from problems that go way beyond the gutters themselves.

Warning Signs You Need Gutter Repair or Replacement

Take a close look at your gutters - ideally from the ground with a good pair of binoculars, and again during or right after a rain event. Here's what to watch for:

  • Gutters pulling away from the fascia: When you see gaps between the gutter and the board it's attached to, the fasteners have failed. This is often caused by the weight of debris buildup or wood rot in the fascia behind. A gutter that's separating from the house is no longer doing its job - water runs straight behind it and down the wall.
  • Sagging sections: Gutters should run level or with a very slight pitch toward the downspout. A visible sag in the middle of a run means either the hangers have pulled loose or the gutter is holding standing water and the weight has caused it to deform. Either way, it needs attention.
  • Water overflow during rain: If water is pouring over the front lip of your gutters during a storm, they're either clogged, improperly sized for your roof's surface area, or have lost their pitch. Overflow during heavy rain is one of the most common ways that foundation and siding damage starts.
  • Peeling paint or staining on siding near gutters: Streaks or bubbling paint on your siding directly below the gutter line is a classic sign that water has been running down the outside of the gutter instead of through it. This usually means the gutter is overflowing, has a hole, or has separated from the fascia.
  • Rust, holes, or visible cracks: Small holes and rust spots don't stay small. Once a gutter section starts to corrode or crack, water will escape at that point every time it rains. A small drip today becomes a stream next season.
  • Standing water in gutters after rain stops: Gutters should drain completely within a few hours of a rainstorm. If water is still sitting in your gutters the next day - or longer - you either have a pitch problem or a clog that's preventing proper drainage. Standing water accelerates corrosion and becomes a mosquito breeding ground in warm Inland Empire weather.
  • Gutters more than 20 years old: Aluminum gutters typically last 20 years; galvanized steel about 15–20 years. If your gutters are approaching or past that mark, even ones that look okay from the ground may have hidden issues. A professional inspection is worthwhile before another rainy season hits.
  • Water damage to fascia or soffit: Soft, discolored, or spongy wood on your fascia boards or soffit directly behind and beneath the gutters is a sign that water has been infiltrating that area, likely for a long time. This is a more serious issue - the gutter is only part of the repair at this point.
  • Foundation erosion or soil washout near the house: Look at the ground at the base of your home's perimeter. If you see bare soil, erosion channels, or mulch that's been pushed away, water is hitting the ground hard right next to your foundation. That means gutters are not directing water away properly.
  • Improper pitch - water doesn't drain toward the downspout: Gutters should slope about 1/4 inch for every 10 feet toward the downspout. If water pools in the middle of a run or drains toward the wrong end, the gutters were either installed incorrectly or have shifted over time. Improper pitch is a common issue in older homes throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

What Happens If You Wait?

Gutters exist for one reason: to move water away from your home's structure. When they stop doing that job effectively, the consequences show up in some expensive places.

Fascia and soffit rot is the most immediate problem. These wood components behind your gutters can begin to deteriorate rapidly once water is consistently getting behind or beneath the gutter. Once the fascia is soft, the gutters have nothing solid to attach to - and you end up replacing the fascia in addition to the gutters.

Foundation damage is the longer-term and more serious concern. Water that consistently deposits at the base of your home - especially in the clay-heavy soils common in parts of the Inland Empire - can cause settling, cracking, and moisture infiltration in your foundation or crawlspace. Foundation repair is significantly more expensive than gutter repair. It's not a hypothetical risk; it's a well-documented consequence of chronic drainage failure.

Siding damage, mold behind walls, and landscape erosion are the other downstream effects. In short, gutters are a small investment that protects much larger and more costly parts of your home. Staying on top of them is basic maintenance that pays for itself many times over.

When to Call a Professional

If you see any of the warning signs above, it's time to schedule a professional evaluation rather than trying to patch your way through. A few scenarios where professional help is clearly the right call:

If your gutters are pulling away, sagging, or have significant rust and holes, replacement is almost always more cost-effective than trying to extend their life with repairs. A professional can assess the full scope - including whether the underlying fascia needs work - and give you an honest recommendation.

If you have a two-story home, working on gutters at that height is genuinely dangerous without the right equipment. This isn't a weekend project - it's a job for an experienced crew.

And if you're seeing foundation erosion or water intrusion in your crawlspace, don't delay. Have a roofer and, if necessary, a foundation specialist out to assess the situation as soon as possible.

Pro Tip

Even in Southern California where rainfall is infrequent, cleaning your gutters at least once a year - ideally in late fall before the rainy season - is the single best thing you can do to extend their life. Debris buildup is the leading cause of standing water, overflow, and premature gutter failure. A quick cleaning in October can prevent a costly repair in January.
